Beyond Course Development: Teaching Basics

Teaching Tools: The Basics

While I love to tell people that they don’t need a degree, license, or certificate to teach online, there are still some foundational pieces to teaching that can assist with growing an online teaching business.  For those that didn’t go to school or have professional training related to providing instruction, there are some teaching basics that can assist with course development (outside of making lesson plans, developing curriculum, and creating classes).

Assessments

Depending on the demographic you teach, you may have requests for pre-assessments and post-class assessments.  Knowing the different types of assessments can help you determine which is best to use.

Learning Styles

There are debates about whether learning styles are actually ‘a thing’ but I have always learned best with visuals and most people have a way that they learn best. Being able to implement multiple learning styles can help create an engaging classroom experience.

Accommodations and Modifications

No matter how perfectly crafted your course is, always be mindful of learning differences and ways you can accommodate or modify your courses to reach all your participants.

Cultural Competency

This is an area that requires constant learning.  I would highly recommend attending workshops and professional development related to cultural competency and make sure to learn from diverse instructors.  To add to this, learning about creating inclusive classrooms can be beneficial for those in your class as well as for your own personal growth.
