How to Turn Your Child’s Love for Video Games into Fun Writing Lessons

When I was in college, I took a class about integrating video games into the classroom. I remember my professor saying, “If you can’t beat them, join them… and teach through them!” At the time, I didn’t realize how much that advice would stick with me years later.

Kids these days spend hours exploring virtual worlds, completing quests, and solving in-game puzzles. What if you could take that passion and channel it into writing practice? The truth is, video games are full of storytelling elements, problem-solving opportunities, and creative ideas that can make writing lessons exciting and relatable.

Here are a few ways to get started:

  1. Quest Journals: Encourage your child to keep a “quest journal” where they describe in detail what happens in a game. Who did they meet? What challenges did they face? This helps build narrative skills and sequencing.

  2. Character Profiles: Have your child write character profiles for their favorite in-game characters. Ask questions like, What motivates them? What’s their backstory? This deepens understanding of character development and descriptive writing.

  3. Dialogue Practice: Many games are rich in dialogue. Challenge your child to write alternative conversations or add lines for side characters. This improves dialogue skills and shows how words shape personality.

  4. Fan Fiction Adventures: Let them create short stories set in the game’s universe. They’ll get to explore plot structure, conflict, and resolution—all while staying immersed in a world they love.

  5. Problem-Solving Essays: Some games present puzzles or moral dilemmas. Ask your child to explain how they solved a challenge or justify a choice they made. This encourages critical thinking and persuasive writing.

By linking writing assignments to something they’re already passionate about, you can make literacy fun, interactive, and meaningful. Instead of seeing writing as a chore, your child begins to view it as another way to explore and expand the worlds they love.
