IIt’s something about being an educator that makes people think that the work done should be FREE!  I can’t think of any other industry where there is such a high expectation to be overworked and underpaid.  I also can’t get behind the, “I love what I do, I would do it for free!” folks.

I absolutely love what I do, but I have bills and a certain lifestyle I enjoy living much more than providing free labor I am very altruistic in my volunteering, but it is a choice I make versus someone expecting me to work for free (ie. asking multiple questions in my DMs without booking a consultation).  Interestingly enough, one of the most common questions I get asked about teaching online is related to pricing for classes.  If you have ever attended one of my sessions, you already know my stance on that!

So, I’ll leave you with this – I don’t work for free; however, I have plenty of free resources throughout this blog and in my newsletters.  Also, make sure you charge what you’re worth!

Grant Info

In my previous position, way back when I still worked for the public school system, I was also a grant writer.  I wrote grants that awarded the school I was at funds for small projects like the community garden and larger grants that got the school a $25000 playground.

I apply those same skills for my business.  It was much easier getting grants for the schools, mainly because the metrics were readily available, and I didn’t have to compile them myself.  Also, I find more grants for product-based businesses than service based; either way, the money is out there.

When life gets a little less busy, I’ll add a full blog on grant writing.  Until then, I will share this quick tip, if you’re not confident about writing grants, check your local SBA for assistance.  Use those resources!

Updates

I interviewed with AfroTech and discussed the future of my Academy!  I have some great things in the work.

If you missed any of the workshops, the replay is now available.  With plans to expand my Academy and updating the #GETIT course, I won’t be offering live workshops anytime soon.

The #GETIT course is getting some updates.  I’ll be adding steps on building a website and the email templates I used for pre- and post-launch.  The price for the course will be going up in 2024!
