Online Teaching vs Teaching Online: Is There Really a Difference

Is there a difference between these two? No, not really.  However, there is a difference between teaching online for a company versus teaching online independently.

In my online teaching journey, I’ve done both and I definitely prefer the latter. Here’s a quick five similarities and differences…

Teaching for a company vs Teaching independently:

1.       They set your pay vs you determine your hourly rate.

2.       They provide the content you teach (sometimes) vs you develop your own content.

3.       They provide the clients vs you have to find your own.

Both may require:

4.       A flexible schedule.

5.       Audio, video, and a chat function or none.

When I first started teaching online as a side hustle, I worked for several online tutoring companies.  My favorite, at the time, was Wynant because I was able to set my pay rate and hours.

The first online tutoring company that I worked on was Brainfuse.  It was easy work because I only used a whiteboard to interact with students (no audio, no video).  However, the pay rate for most online tutoring companies is way below what I charge for private sessions.

This is why I stuck to working for myself.  Everyone isn’t ready to branch off on their own and teach or tutor independently.  Thankfully, there are options for those that only want to earn a side income.

My upcoming Accelerator Course is for people that want to turn their passion into a inform business, even if it is just a side hustle right now.
